"Architecture is when the window is too big ... Or too small."

House Open/Closed occupies an infill lot located on a bluff at the base of the Colorado foothills. Clad in Shou Sugi Ban, the façade presents a relatively closed face to the street, maintaining privacy within. An over-scaled second floor window questions the expectations we have of domestic scale.

The private side of the home is three stories of floor to ceiling glass opening up to views out over the town, Colorado foothills and adjacent plains. Further questioning domestic expectations, the aerie master suite and main living spaces share transparency with the outdoors. The spaces invoke a sense of flying or soaring above the rooftops to the south, like the hang gliders in the distance.
